Last year I wrote Photo Ops, Donations, And The Selling of Our Dead, when the Human Rights Campaign tried to hijack the Washington D.C. Transgender Day of Remembrance.
To refresh your memory, the founder of the Transgender Day of Remembrance, Gwen Smith, said of the day:
“The Transgender Day of Remembrance serves several purposes. It raises public awareness of hate crimes against transgendered people, an action that current media doesn’t perform. Day of Remembrance publicly mourns and honors the lives of our brothers and sisters who might otherwise be forgotten. Through the vigil, we express love and respect for our people in the face of national indifference and hatred. Day of Remembrance reminds non-transgender people that we are their sons, daughters, parents, friends and lovers. Day of Remembrance gives our allies a chance to step forward with us and stand in vigil, memorializing those of us who’ve died by anti-transgender violence.”
As if transsexuals needed any help being stigmatized, Conan O’Brien did his part to further negative stereotypes with a comedy sketch portraying transsexauls as mustached strippers.
I already knew Conan O’Brian was a douche. This just proves it.

He wasn’t mocking transsexual women. He was mocking silly transgender men. I thought it was hilarious.
Oh yes, because there aren’t any transsexual women doing sex work to get SRS.

I don’t find Conan to be sensitive about pretty much anything. *sigh*, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at the latest stunt. Well, at least Leno is back soon!

His show came to San Francisco ,(while I was living in SF still), and he had a skit basically taunting San Francisco’s inclusion of trans people.
It was to say the least very depressing and upsetting even while I was on antidepressants.

We need to remember the horrible comments made on KRXQ radio of Sacremento, CA. After an uproar from the community, twelve major sponsors backed out. As an LGBT community we command an estimated $712 billion chunk of the U.S. econmy, we need to exercise that power. Write the sponsors of Conan O’Brian and remind them we will not tolerate that kind of derogatory humor or treatment. Encourage your friends, family and comunnity to do the same!!!

I did not find this sketch offensive at all. I watch Conan every night and he mocks everybody. Many comics focus on mocking celebrities, but Conan spreads it out. He also does more self-mockery than any other comic. We don’t need to be above a little mockery.
However, this sketch didn’t even mock transsexuals. It was more mocking of tabloids and himself. Conan was setting up an embarrassing picture of himself to sell to the tabloids. This is a running gag that he does about once a week, so he has to dig deeper every week to come up with something better than the last one.
Conan was setting up a picture of himself being drunk and caught in an embarrasing situation, in this case a strip club. So he has two gorgeous models laying on his table. So he says, “Let’s make it more embarrassing,” and the sign for the club changes to Trannies, and the women put on fake mustaches. Even now, it makes me chuckle.
So trannies have mustaches? And are strippers? You can justify it any way that makes you feel better, but I think it’s obvious he did. Just because he was mocking the tabloids and himself doesn’t mean that he wasn’t smearing transsexuals too.

This is, alas, another sad example of the type of media penetration and attention we get, as they butts of jokes like this. The basic premise behind Conan’s series here, faking his own paparazzi scandals, has a lot of comedic potential. But going where he did with it was more than a little cruel.
This, in the grand scheme of things, is relatively small but it stings all the more due precisely to the dearth of *real* storytelling about our issues and lives. This kind of crap would be at least slightly more tolerable if we had documentaries on major channels that told our story in an unfiltered way, or movies that showed the real triumphs and challenges of our lives. But we don’t.
There’s a goldmine of humour to be had about our lives, but if you note the rare cases where good T-humour made an appearance (various TS Roadmap pages, Venus Envy, a webcomic) the joke is about the absurd situations we often find ourselves in or the terribly tangled web society leaves us trapped in. A new movie by Andrea James and Calpernia Adams explores the lighter side of living in stealth, for example.
In all these cases the humour is about the awkward positions society puts us in, which can be quite funny! But in nonsense like this Conan skit the joke is entirely on us and how ‘freakish’ we are. Nothing deep, just a cheap laugh as the headline states.
And that’s what bothers me the most. It’s a cheap, easy laugh that does nothing but promote old, worn out stereotypes. It’s tiresome.
