I can think of one gay and lesbian organization that hasn't ignored the transgender community: Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD www.glad.org) of Boston. This civil rights law firm that brought us same-sex marriage in MA and CT has also been fighting legal and political battles for transgender people for over ten years. They have a Transgender Rights Project headed by a trans attorney. They are fighting tirelessly to get House Bill 1728 passed to include gender identity in our employment non discrimination law.

I don't deny that transgender people have been treated like an unwanted child by many gay and lesbian organizations, HRC being the worst of them, but in the case of GLAD we have true advocacy on our behalf and for this I am grateful.

LOL, yes we have no place to go, except into the highest places in government. Ya might want to check this website. Babs is transgender and just got appointed to the DNC. As far as coming back for us, we don't need anyone else to gain our rights. We're doing it for ourselves. See also: Diego Sanchez.

The transgender have no where else to go.

The great "umbrella" experiment that went horribly wrong, a melting pot for "everyone else", dumped under the "T" portion of the alphabet soup. By mixing it all up, the transgender lost all credibiltiy in the eyes of mainstream, they became everything that is wrong with society today, they have taken the brunt of the abuse, the scorn and the backlash, alienated from mainstream, disrespected from within the very group they sought integration with.

The transsexuals, caught up in the umbrella against their will, don't want the transgender either. More to the point, they don't want to be included with many of the groups that are melded into the mix that make up the umbrella. Specifically, the gender queers, transvestites, crossdressers, the non-ops, gender benders, drag queens and how many other flavors you have in that unpallattable mix that nobody wants to invite to dinner.

The G & L hasn't written the transgender out of the picture, they were never in the picture to begin with. And once they get what they want, do you really think any of them are gonna come back for you?

Good luck with that.

I've felt the same way for a long time. It seems as though the G&L have written us out of the picture. And obviously they have come a long way and are now generally accepted in society. We have openly gay and lesbian politicians, actors and musicians. Even in the everyday work place it is not uncommon to have an openly gay or lesbian employee and no one thinks twice about it.
I feel as though 'Stonewall' has been stolen from us and I call upon all TS/TG to 'Take Back The Wall'. Stonewall was a transgender bar, not a gay bar. They were routinely harassed by police until one day they had had enough and fought back. We need to take back the 'Wall'. It is ours.
I don't, and I know most of my transgender friends, don't see themselves as gay. We have been lumped into the mix as 'no other place to put you'. We have to seperate ourselves from the GLB and take back the banner that was ours from the begining. Take Back The Wall.
